You got your Tony Lama’s on your jeans pressed tight…
What self respecting Jimmy Buffett fan hasn’t seen Rancho Deluxe? Until last night I hadn’t. Sunday night I was looking through the channels and caught the very end of it. I quickly searched forward to see if it would come on again. I found it and set the Tivo up to record it. I was pretty much left on my own last night so I took the time to watch the movie.
This movie came out in 1975. I had been on the planet for one whole year at the time. I must say that for a 70’s movie, it was pretty good. Jeff Bridges, Sam Waterson, Slim Pickens and even Jimmy Buffett. For me Jeff Bridges is “The Dude” in The Big Lebowski and Sam Waterson is “The Dude in the TD Ameritrade Commercials”. It was interesting to see them in some earlier rolls. Sam Waterson as a “half-breed” Indian. I never would have imagined him in a role like that.
The best scene for me of coarse was in the bar with Jimmy Buffett “Rockin’ and a Rollin’ on a Livingston Saturday Night”. It looked like he was having a good time. Then there was a creatively filmed discussion between Harry Dean Stanton and Jeff Bridges showing their reflections in a Pong screen. The movie was missing a huge bar brawl as you would expect to find in any 70’s movie when they step into a Honky Tonk bar. I enjoyed the scenic views. It looked like I would be right at home in that town.
As a Parrothead, I probably enjoyed it more than the average person would. The soundtrack is a far cry different that that of modern day Jimmy Buffett and the recent soundtrack from the movie “Hoot”. Livingston Saturday Night is definitely the best song in the movie. Now I’ll have a new understanding of that song every time I hear it.
So for Parrotheads, I’ll give the movie 3 fins up!
